The federal government announced in January its new federal financial crimes enforcement unit, consisting of federal prosecutors, FBI agents, and analysts to conduct investigations into home mortgage fraud and abuses that played a part in the economic recession which began in 2008. These officials will work with state law enforcement in an information-sharing collaboration aimed at investigating the financial services industry. The beefing up all these resources for criminal investigations is expected to lead to an increase of federal prosecutions in mortgage fraud, securities fraud, bank fraud, and investment fraud.
Under the new unit, 11 financial institutions have been subpoenaed recently, with promises of more by the federal government to follow. Citibank recently agreed to a $158.3 million settlement against civil claims that it defrauded the government in insuring risky home mortgages. According to the federal government’s case, such loans should never have been transacted, insured, or sold. This case further points up the aggressive federal stance being taken on actions and behaviors which led to the current recession.
