A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder after killing a 19-year-old man in
New York City
by means of suffocation. The crime took place in the early morning on Saturday, August 30 in
Chelsea
. The suspect, Jerome Cancel, allegedly met the victim, Kevin Pravia, in
Union
Square
Park
early Saturday morning, where the victim was supposedly looking to purchase drugs. The two men agreed to go back to Cancel's apartment in
Chelsea
. When Pravia fell asleep on Cancel's couch, Cancel punched Pravia in face, put a plastic bag in the victim's mouth, and tied a television cord around his neck. After committing the crime, Cancel then proceeded to watch the horror movie "Saw" before leaving his apartment around 11 a.m with Pravia's laptop, cellphone, and iPod. Cancel later sold the laptop and cellphone, which was subsequently recovered by the police.
Cancel has been charged with first and second degree murder for the crimes.
Cancel had previously been arrested for unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was also questioned for larceny in a different case after his father accused him of stealing his PlayStation.
