FBI Reports Violent Crime has Decreased Nationally

According to the Associated Press, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is reporting that instances of
violent crime have decreased. Data was released today that would support the FBI's claim as there has been a slight decrease in violent crimes committed throughout the United States. This decrease has put an end to the upward trend in murders, robberies and various other types of violent crimes that the nation experienced in prior years.
The data reports that 1.4 million violent crimes were reported to law enforcement last year, which is approximately 10,000 less incidents than in 2006.
"Justice Department spokesman Peter Carr said the data are the result of crackdowns on gangs, drug dealers and gun crimes, and used the drop to call on Congress for $200 million in additional funding to continue such efforts," wrote the Associated Press.
Across the nation, mayors and local government officials have asked for more federal funding to combat crime in their communities. Local crackdown campaigns are causing a decrease in the nation's violent crime rate and crimes within that category, like carjacking,
murder,
thefts and larcenies.
If campaigns continue to be effective, and the downward trend remains in effect, it is likely that in 2008 we may see lowest level of crimes committed since 2000.
