Dallas Public Corruption Trial Delayed

Today, defense attorneys have officially petitioned U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn to move the start date of the Dallas City Hall
public corruption case to June 22, 2009. The case is currently set for January 20, 2009, but the defense team, led by high-profile attorney Abbe Lowell, would like to push the date back further.
The reason, according to the motion that was filed on December 12th, is that there are numerous scheduling conflicts with other trials. In particular, Lowell is representing a prominent developer in a national security case that is expected to begin early next year. Both the developer and City Hall cases are expected to last months, according to court insiders.
Mr. Lowell is representing one of the two defendants who were accused of passing on classified intelligence to Israeli officials. The trial is expected to feature testimony from Bush administration officials, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Both defendants are members of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying group with immense power in the U.S.
There are two other defense attorneys involved in the case who report that they also have scheduling conflicts. Both attorneys are representing Texas clients who were alleged to have been involved in a large Internet pharmacy racketeering case, which is set for trial in late February.
At this time, it is uncertain whether Judge Lynn will grant the defense team's request for a delay or decide to enforce the original trial date.
