A Houston police officer recently made a historic drug bust completely on accident. The officer spotted a broken down car and stopped to render assistance. After being unable to get the car back into operation, the officer began calling for a tow truck. The male driver of the vehicle left the scene as the officer was making the call. The officer found the behavior suspicious and so began a search of the vehicle. He discovered that the seat portion of the back seat was loose. When he lifted it up he found an enormous stash of drugs. In total, there were 15 kilos of methamphetamine and 17 kilos of black tar heroin—nearly three times that of any previous drug bust. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be about $1.7 million. The Houston criminal justice system takes drug charges very seriously so it is vital that you have the representation of a skilled drug crimes lawyer on your side when facing any drug offense charges.
Investigators are still searching for the driver of the vehicle. They are fairly certain that the drugs originated from Mexican drug cartels but have yet to discover how they got to Houston and where they were going. Drug trafficking is a federal crime. Heroin is a Schedule I drug and methamphetamine is listed as a Schedule II drug which means a minimum sentence of five years in federal prison may be sentenced if a conviction is obtained for the trafficking of either of these drugs. When the drugs are in such high amounts as in the above case, a 30 year sentence is not uncommon.
