Recently, a 69 year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run incident in the city of Rosemead. The woman was struck by an SUV as she crossed a street and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The following day a 32 year-old woman turned herself in for the crime and was arrested for hit-and-run causing death or injury and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. She was later released on $50,000 bond.
Hit-and-run may be charged in California as a misdemeanor or felony, depending on what occurred as a result of the accident. Under California's Vehicle Code 20002, a misdemeanor is charged when someone leaves the scene of the accident without identifying themselves after causing property damage. When the hit-and-run results in the injury or death of another person, as in the case above, it results in the more serious charge of a felony.
Even the less serious misdemeanor hit-and-run will result in stiff penalties, including fines of up to $1,000 and / or a jail sentence of up to six months. In the case of a felony hit-and-run, the penalties are even more severe, including a fine of $1,000 up to $10,000 and a prison term of three or four years. If the hit-and-run driver was guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs, additional DUI charges will also result.
