Property Owner Suspected of Stealing Tractor
By the Law Office of Wyndel G. Darville
Deputies with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office recently arrested a man suspected of stealing a tractor valued at over $82,000. Authorities in Hillsborough County had been on the lookout for a tractor that had been stolen in mid October. There were no leads in the theft case for weeks until recently when detectives in Sarasota received a "stolen vehicle alert". The alert sent the detectives to property owned by a 31-year-old man, J.T. The detectives arrived at the location and spoke with J.T. who denied knowing anything about a stolen tractor or being in possession of a tractor. He consented to allowing the detectives to search his property and the stolen tractor, which has a front loader and backhoe, was found. It was located near the man's pool and one of his vehicles. It was loaded up and returned to the owner in Hillsborough County. J.T. continued to deny knowledge of having the tractor on his property and reportedly stated that it must have just been put there. The man was taken into custody on suspicion of stealing the pricey tractor and was later charged with grand theft, a felony. He was released on $7,500 bail the following day. About Grand Theft Charges
Grand theft is a felony offense charged when someone is suspected of intentionally stealing another's property of a value of $300 or more. The theft of property worth over $100,000 is a first degree felony offense punishable by up to 30 years in prison and fines up to $10,000. Second degree grand theft for property valued at over $20,000 and up to $100,000 and sentencing may include up to 15 years incarceration and $10,000 in fines. Third degree grand theft for stolen property worth $300 to $20,000 could result in $5,000 in fines and five years in prison. Allegations of stealing property valued between $100 and $300 will likely be charged as petit theft, a misdemeanor, which still has incarceration and fines as penalties.
