According to the Los Angeles Times, a forty-four-year-old Los Angeles police sergeant was arrested this past weekend on suspicion of committing burglary in one of the Foothills communities. An investigation is now underway by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department to determine whether the same man is responsible for other break-ins that happened in the same area.
Woman Douses Suspect with Pepper Spray
The 18-year-veteran LAPD officer was arrested shortly after a woman confronted him in her large home located in Mentone, San Bernardino County. The victim, a female physician, was returning from walking her dogs at around 6 p.m. when she encountered the intruder. She ran downstairs and as he was pursuing her, she doused him with a powerful type of pepper spray normally used to ward off bears.
According to a San Bernardino Sheriff's sergeant, the suspect fled and shortly thereafter crashed his car just a few miles down the road as a result of the pepper spray irritation in his eyes. Police found jewelry, cameras, and camera equipment in the suspect's car which belonged to the victim and he smelled of pepper spray. He was released on $125,000 bail and is on administrative leave pending the criminal process.
