A Fresno man who was only 19 when he committed a violent crime was sentenced recently to life in prison with the possibility of parole. The man was convicted of beating, robbing, and cramming an elderly woman into the trunk of her car. The incident took place in December 2011 at the woman's home in northwest Fresno. Another man was an accomplice in the crime who is currently awaiting a sentence. The two men had planned to take the woman to a remote area where they would shoot her.
The man was convicted by a jury in May of this year of the crimes of kidnapping, robbery, burglary, residential burglary, false imprisonment, and elder abuse. The woman, aged 69, was rescued when her daughter drove up to the house blocking the car in which the woman was held.
The man will not be eligible for parole until after he has served 16 ½ years in a state prison. Generally, life in prison sentences are handed down in first-degree murder cases, especially when that crime is committed during the commission of another felony or when aggravating circumstances are also present. Currently, about 132,000 inmates or one in 10 are serving sentences of life in prison in the United States.
