A 28-year-old Melville man was taken into custody after an investigation into a fatal bicycle-auto accident that had happened earlier that day. A call was made to authorities at about 10:00 in the morning on Labor Day when a motorist driving on a roadway near the Long Island Expressway reported finding a body at the side of the road. Paramedics and police arrived at the scene but the cyclist had died from severe injuries. No one had called 911 or authorities to report an accident before the 10:00 call. The 44-year-old cyclist had been wearing brightly colored cycling gear and police asked the public's help with any information concerning the accident. The investigation led to the eventual arrest of Melville man, R.C., after 7:00 the night of the crash. He is accused of striking the cyclist with his black SUV while traveling on Express Drive North and then leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Authorities have not said whether or not alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in the incident. Talk to a criminal defense lawyer right away if you have been arrested for a crime.
Hit and run is a serious accusation and this crime is severely punished if a conviction is obtained. Whether an accident occurs between two vehicles, a car and a pedestrian, a vehicle and a cyclist or anytime there is property damage or injury to others, those involved in the wreck are required to remain at the scene and render aid or call for emergency assistance if able. If you are accused of knowingly causing injury or property damage and then driving off from the accident then you could face the possibility of incarceration and steep fines.
