21-year-old J.B. of Columbia was recently taken into custody and charged with serious hit and run offenses pertaining to an incident that occurred on May 1st. South Carolina Highway Patrol officers had been looking for the suspect responsible for the death of a 50-year-old man. D.L. had been walking north alongside the northbound lane of a road around 3:00 in the morning when he was fatally struck by a car. Investigators who reconstructed the scene theorized that a vehicle also heading north had hit the man from behind and caused severe injuries before leaving the scene. Officers announced that they were looking for a vehicle which had most likely sustained damage to the front of the car on the passenger side as well as damage to the front passenger side wheel well and undercarriage. Authorities had no suspects until they received a tip on the Crime Stoppers hot line which led them to J.B about two weeks after the accident. Officers arrived at her home and took her into custody without incident. Reports do not indicate if the woman's late model sports sedan showed signs of having possibly been involved in the fatal accident. A criminal defense lawyer may be able to help you with your case if you have been unfairly arrested and charged with a crime.
J.B. has been charged with driving without a valid driver's license and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death. If convicted of the charges she could be sentenced to significant prison time, fines, lengthy probation, community service and other penalties. Hit and run involving a fatality is a felony offense punishable by up to 25 years incarceration and anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000 in fines. South Carolina law requires that any driver involved in an accident resulting in injury or death must remain at the scene until emergency personnel arrive.
