The Dallas Cowboys nose tackle, J.B., whose intoxicated driving resulted in the death of his friend and teammate last December, faces potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison. The 24 year-old player was driving on a suspended license and with a blood alcohol concentration of .189 percent which is more than twice the legal limit when he crashed his car by hitting a curb. He was apparently speeding and swerving before the crash, which end with his car flipping over. The incident is his second DUI; he was convicted of driving under the influence three years earlier in Illinois. He is being charged with a 2nd degree felony of intoxication manslaughter.
The case is still pending with no court dates as yet set. The first assistant District Attorney in Dallas County said he hopes to have the case tried soon and that it has the potential to send a strong message to the public concerning the seriousness of driving while under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs. The player is out of jail on a $100,000 bond and was put on a non active list by Cowboys officials. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one third of all traffic accident deaths are the result of drunk driving.
