The Increasing Incidence of Internet Crime

Internet Crimes Escalate; Losses Double
As long as there has been society, there has been crime. Most crimes are in some way a form of either violence, sexual offenses, or theft, and internet crimes are no different. As society became more industrialized, crimes got more sophisticated, and there were new ways in which to commit crimes. For example, firearms are now the weapon of choice for average citizens and criminals alike, something that we would not have predicted a century ago. The past decade or so has been a burgeoning time for the internet, but as it has grown and become integrated into most people's everyday lives, abuses have increased. Internet crimes are not something we would have considered to be a problem a few decades ago, and yet in 2009 there were $559.7 million reported in losses from internet-facilitated scams and thefts. The losses are more than twice what was reported only a year earlier.
When a type of crime dramatically increases over a short period of time, law enforcement officials tend to be overenthusiastic in prosecuting those accused of the crime. As the rash of internet crimes has cropped up, so have laws against them. Federal and state law enforcement agencies are eager to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law in order to make an example out of each convict and to deter future crimes. If you have been accused of an internet crime, it is imperative that you protect yourself and your future and retain a highly skilled Chicago criminal defense attorney.
