Organic Produce Fraud at California’s Farmers Markets

By David M. Wallin   Nov. 17, 2010 3:50p

In 1977, the state of California sanctioned farmers markets; however for the first time since then, the state is now reconsidering the rules that apply to how the certified organic operations are being run. In light of recent accusations at Southern California markets, involving inorganic products from Mexico being passed off as organic or locally grown, are now being addressed by the Department of Food and Agriculture. The Los Angeles Times, the Santa Monica Daily Press and KNBC have all reported on the topic in recent months.

California's small, cozy farmers markets have become quite popular in the sunshine state where many of its residents are active and health conscious. For lots of individuals, eating and living organic is a daily part of life, which they take quite seriously. Because of the growing popularity of Farmers Markets, California now has roughly 700 operations and more than 2000 certified organic producers.

There are many local shoppers or consumers who make a special trip to the Farmers market with the intention of purchasing either locally grown or organic produce to benefit both their health and support both the local farmers and the organic farmers. When they are duped into buying non-organic, pesticide laced produce, at organic prices; they are the unwitting victims of fraud.
