Last week, a 21 year-old drunk driver slammed into a police car in Houston and killed another 21 year-old woman who was being driven to a sober center by police. The woman who died had been picked up by police because she, too, was intoxicated. The police officer in the incident had handcuffed the woman, C. N., but had not ensured that she was wearing a seatbelt which was a violation. C. N. was in police custody for her own protection, news reports said. The drunk driver, N. M., had just left a bar and admitted she shouldn't have been driving when she barreled into the patrol car in her Chevy Cobalt. N. M. suffered head injuries and her passenger also sustained minor injuries. The woman in the patrol car was thrown from the vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The drunk driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. The incident is also being investigated by the Houston Police Department's internal affairs regarding the conduct of the female police officer in the incident.
Drunk driving statistics in the state of Texas are among the highest in the nation. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 2,648 serious injury crashes occurred in the state in 2012 that were DUI-related, with an additional 1,257 less serious DUI-related accidents.
