Ohio Man Accused Of Knife-Point Robbery Hides In Home From Law Enforcement

After a tense stand off that lasted for a grueling six hours, police took an elderly man suspected of robbery into custody.

Reporting from Washington Township in Ohio, journalists interviewed sheriff’s deputies involved in the early morning incident. According to law enforcement testimony, the event began when a dispatcher for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office took a call reporting a man attempting to rob passers-by while wielding a knife late Sunday night.

Responding quickly to the report, deputies arrived at the scene of the crime near McEwen Road, eventually tracing the suspect back to Governor’s Square Apartment Complex.

SWAT Team Ends Stand-Off With Tear-Gas Charge

Deputies spoke with several members of the apartment center, quickly ascertaining the identity and apartment number of the alleged robber. Fellow residents said they had noticed the old man standing near the fence that bounded the swimming pool while holding a knife.

“He’s usually hanging out in the parking lot,” confided one resident. “I thought it was really creepy.”

Police were able to contact the suspect over the phone, and attempted to persuade him to come out and surrender to the authorities. He refused, and a long stalemate began, with neither side willing to make a move.

Finally, hours later, the local SWAT Team chose to break into the apartment building. They shot canisters of tear gas into the windows of the residence, then broke down the door and entered the suspect’s home. They found the 61-year old man lying in his bathtub, and promptly took him into custody.

Police say they intend to charge him with aggravated robbery.
