In Queens, New York, a Nassau County Police officer was shot and killed by a runaway suspect. The assailant also shot and murdered another motorist. According to The Wall Street Journal, the cruel murder occurred on the Cross Island Parkway near the Belmont Race Track, and police are already chasing after the attacker. The now-deceased officer was only 29-years-old, and was killed while driving up the entrance ramp of 241st Street when stopping a driver who he suspected as a hit-and-run criminal. The police had been looking for the man who created a hit-and-run situation in Queens earlier that day. When Arthur Lopez saw that the license plate matched that of his suspect, he went to stop the man.
When he was pulled over, the suspect pulled gun and then shot Lopez quickly. He then fled his vehicle, ran up to a Toyota, shot the driver of the vehicle in the head and sped off in the car. That car was also abandoned later on. Dozens of heavily armed NYPD officers and Nassau County law enforcement agents have now begun to look for the suspect along a suburban stretch of Queens Village in New York. The streets have already been cordoned off and low flying police helicopters are hovering overhead so that they can get a bird’s eye view and note any suspicious activities. At eight Queens schools, the students were forced to stay in their buildings.
Two of the schools are no longer on lock down. The state of New York has termed the shooting a tragedy and hopes that they will be able to catch the offender soon and bring him to justice. If you have been charged with shooting a police officer, you will want a hardworking attorney on your side to advocate for you during trial.
