Philadelphia Crime Fighting Under the Microscope

Stop-and-frisk is a police department tactic where the law enforcement seeks to reduce crime in an area by stopping and searching people that they believe may be guilty of some sort of crime. In New York City, the tactic led to about 700,000 stops in the metropolis. While some merited an arrest, others were considered unfair. Some advocates complain that “stop-and-frisk” issues target black and Hispanic young men because of their race. When looking at the sporadic police confrontations in New York, police realized that 85 percent of their stops had been concerning men of this profile. The police department has strongly defended the tactic of stop-and-frisk. They say that it has helped to bring down crime.

They say that they have been able to arrest many weapons offenders who were carrying a concealed gun on the streets. Also, many people have been arrested for having drugs in their pockets, mainly marijuana. Though stop-and-frisk may be effective, the Philadelphia Police Department is seeking to reduce the amount of stop-and-frisk in the area. Apparently, police have been too consumed with this routine stops, which have deterred them from inspecting big crime. Therefore, the amount of homicides in Philadelphia has spiked. The stop-and-frisk crime fighting may be worth it when a policeman wants to arrest people for various weapons and drug possession crimes, but Philadelphia is now seeking to lower the amount of stop-and-frisks in the city. If you were arrested in a stop-and-frisk, then you need to obtain a defense attorney in your area to represent you in court.
