Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for 3rd DWI Conviction

A Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison following a felony DWI conviction.

A Montgomery County jury has sentenced Dennis Kaye Goains, 46, to 30 years in prison (when he will be eligible for parole) after being convicted of DWI for the third time.

The jury recognized Goains was driving a deadly weapon, which could have increased his time in jail or prison if the sentence was lighter.

Goains' previous criminal history contributed to the harsh penalty.  Goains has more than two felony convictions on his record. Texas law says that if a person is found guilty of a third felony offense, they can be sentenced to life in prison.

Goains has been convicted of misdemeanor DWI charges twice before.  Some of his other offenses include forgery, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, theft, criminal trespassing, assault causing bodily injury, and two burglary convictions.

An assault case against Goains is currently being heard in the 410th state District Court.  That case has yet to be resolved.
