Detroit Embezzlement Prosecutor Not Charged

Recently, in Flint, Detroit, an assistant county prosecutor was fired for meeting a defendant in a hotel.  The defendant, a woman who was being prosecuted for embezzlement in Michigan, was alleged to have stolen 1.1 million dollars.  Now, authorities are saying that the prosecutor will not face criminal charges, despite his involvement with the defendant.

The Flint Journal is reporting that the Lapeer County prosecutor's office decided to drop the case against the prosecutor, 46 year old Kennan M. DeWitt.  The office felt that firing Mr. DeWitt was punishment enough and that DeWitt did not attempt to ask for his job back.

Last July, DeWitt was arrested at the hotel where he met the defendant.  DeWitt claimed that he was merely trying to counsel Dana Bacon and that was the extent of his involvement.

Prior to his meeting with the defendant, DeWitt led the prosecution team that was in charge of the embezzlement case.  Bacon was accused of embezzling 1.1 million dollars from the Montrose School District.  In November 2007, she was sentenced after pleading guilty to the 10 felony white collar crime offenses.  Her sentence was one year in Michigan jail.
