In recent months, the amount of tragic shootings has escalated and the lawmakers of the Federal government have begun to serious consider changing the Constitutional approach to gun control. This morning, a fight between who people on a Houston college campus erupted into a shooting that ended in injuries for at least two people that were present. According to reports, the shooting happened between an academic building and a library. Many students were studying in the library at the time of the shooting and were shocked when a college employee rushed in and herded people into a small room where they were told to crouch down.
Thankfully no one was killed in the accident, but the gunfire was frightening and led faculty to believe that another massacre may be starting. Authorities do not have details about what led to the fight, but one of the students involved had an ID and both parties were wounded and hospitalized. A maintenance worker was also caught in the crossfire and taken to the hospital. In addition, a fourth unidentified person was taken to the hospital because of a medical condition, but was not shot. One student said that he had just come out of an EMT class when he saw the injured people in the courtyard.
He ran to see if he could help and shortly after he discovered that two of the people had been wounded by gunshots. While the situation was under control shortly, the shooting is evidence that change may need to happen throughout the United States concerning gun control. In Texas, legislation is considering allowing faculty to bring guns on college campuses so that they will be readily armed in case of a shooting like this. They hope that allowing responsible staff to carry weapons will keep students from coming on campus with weapons solely meant for destruction. Up until today, Lone Star College has been considered a gun-free and safe campus. The college’s 40-year-record of safety was demolished in one day. Witnesses say that they heard around eight shots. Some students in a psychology class say that they were terrified when they heard the guns go off.
Many say that their first thoughts were of the Sandy Hook shooting that took place only a month ago and caused the deaths of over 20 men and women. Students all over the campus went running when they heard the first shots, and the school was placed on lockdown. The campus closed and everyone was allowed to go home for the day while the peace officers arrived to sort through the details of the shooting. Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday. Because no one was killed in the accident, it will not take as long to clean up the scene of the crime and determine what to do with the assaulter.
If you are caught carrying a gun on a school campus, chances are that will face extreme punishments because of the gravity of these crimes in light of recent events. While each state has their own weapons laws which they abide by, many of those gun policies are currently being scrutinized and changed. As a result, you may be subject to other laws that you were not aware of before. If you want more information about the different weapons statutes in your state or you want to learn more about the penalties that you may face if you are caught carrying a gun on a school campus, then you need to talk to a local attorney. A local criminal defense lawyer can also represent you in court if you should need an advocate after being charged with a weapons violation.
