In Oakland, California, students were terrified when a school alumni burst into Oikos University on April 3rd. The 43-year-old Korean with the initials L.G. was on the hunt for one of the school administrators. Investigators assume that he had some sort of history with this woman, because he was bent on her murder. When a secretary informed him that she was not at school that day, L.G. backed the woman into a classroom along with students. He told them to line up against the wall, but when some students refused, the angry and crazed man unleashed bullets.
According to ABC News, five victims were killed on the spot at the University, while another two passed away once they reached the hospital. Six women and one man died. The victims ranged from 21 to 40 and were international students from Korea, Nigeria, and Nepal. KGO-TV reports that L.G. also wounded another man when he stole his car to flee the scene of the crime. Three other victims were wounded, but have declined to inform the press of their current condition. As soon as L.G. heard that the police were on their way he commandeered a car and took off. He was tracked and arrested about an hour after his rampage.
The Oakland Police Chief says that it is obvious the L.G. had something against the school administration. He was also angry at the students who had attended school with him in the past. He claims that they mistreated him, disrespected him, and made him feel undervalued. Allegedly, L.G. was behaviorally inappropriate and was asked to leave the school several months ago. Despite the fact that his anger was directed at specific individuals, he murdered without preferences. Sources say that L.G.'s martyrs were shot at random, and not because of a pre-planned act. In fact, his only intention was to shoot and kill on the school premises, and he would choose any available victim as his target.
The police chief told Good Morning America that L.G. had $23,000 worth of debt hanging over his head. The debt was from 2006 and 2009 federal tax liens. L.G. is also coping with the pain of losing two relatives within one year. His brother was suddenly killed in an auto accident in March 2011, and his mother perished in Seoul, Korea. L.G.'s father was living in Oakland until recently when he moved away, leaving L.G. alone to handle his hurt. L.G. was originally from Virginia, where he left behind a trail of neglected traffic violation citations. The San Francisco Chronicle confirmed that L.G. was recently kicked out of Oikos University. Oikos is a vocational Christian academy that offers classes on Asian medicine, music, nursing, and theology. It is largely Korean-American.
L.G. was apprehended at a Safeway Supermarket near Alameda, California only about an hour after his crime. The shooter stopped at the Safeway and was wandering suspiciously when a security guard at the shopping center approached him. L.G. confessed that he needed to speak to the police because he had just shot some people. The guard contacted the police at once, and L.G. was put in custody. The shooter has remained in Oakland jail for the time being, while he awaits his trial. Because of his self-confession at the crime scene, news stations speculate that he will be cooperative in trial and confess his crime openly. Still, the police say that L.G. is not remorseful for what he did, and seems to think that his crime is justified. L.G. faces years in prison for his actions.
