John Kaschins

A native of southern Minnesota, Mr. Kaschins was raised in northeast Iowa. After earning a bachelor's degree from Wabash College, Mr. Kaschins earned his Juris Doctorate from Gonzaga University School of Law. Mr. Kaschins began defending criminal cases at both the trial and appellate level in 2002. Notably, Mr. Kaschins composed the sole state-court appeal for Ralph Blakely, Jr., and his analysis was ultimately approved by the U.S. Supreme Court in its seminal Blakely v. Washington opinion.

Continuing a proud family tradition of public service, Mr. Kaschins served as the Chief Public Defender for the federally-recognized Colorado River Indian Tribes in Parker, Arizona. Mr. Kaschins has also served as an Assistant Public Defender in Minnesota's Third Judicial District, which continues to have one of the highest caseload rates in the state. Even so, in 2008 Mr. Kaschins conducted the largest number of jury trials of any public defender in the district; he prepared more than twenty cases for trial, and actually took thirteen of them to verdict (that is an average of one jury trial every 28 days for an entire year).

In addition to criminal cases, Mr. Kaschins has also successfully handled numerous personal injury cases, including police brutality, automobile negligence, and employment discrimination claims. Mr. Kaschins is familiar with all courts in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs, as well as all courts in southern Minnesota. Mr. Kaschins is licensed to practice throughout Minnesota, and is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Minnesota Association for Justice.
