Just last month, embezzlement went public at the Iona Catholic College in New Rochelle New York. Sister Marie Thornton, the school's Vice President of Finance was fired last year and the theft was in the amount of $800,000 which occurred over the past decade. The funds were apparently taken out of the school's main operating budget. The information was made known on a recent IRS tax filing form for 2008. Sister Thornton's whereabouts at present was not known and no formal charges have yet been made. The college apparently recovered some of the stolen funds but would not say how much.
Penalties for Embezzlement
Embezzlement is considered a white collar crime and can happen almost anywhere. It can be legally defined as the fraudulent conversion of another's property by a person who is in a position of trust, such as an agent or employee. The penalties for embezzlement vary according to the type of trust that was assumed or agreed upon as well as the quantity of what was embezzled and each state can determine their own penalties. The penalties for embezzlement include:
- Sentencing to jail or prison
- Probation or parole
- Community service
- Restitution to the victim(s)
- Heavy monetary fines and fees
Having a conviction for embezzlement can cause loss of social status, respect and cause much disruption in one's life. It can literally ruin a person's professional and personal reputation. It sometimes happens as well that an individual who has embezzled will make it seem as if another is responsible, resulting in false charges being brought against that individual. One can be "set up" or wrongly accused of any crime, including embezzlement.
