After being pulled over on February 3rd in Cobb County, APD Investigator Bennie Bridges is suspended without pay, the Atlanta Examiner reports. Bridges, driving his officially assigned vehicle, was speeding at over 100 miles per hour on I-285 when he passed a checkpoint manned by a Cobb County officer early in February. The officer pulled Bridges over, and arrested him with the assistance of a second officer after discovering an open baggie of marijuana in the vehicle. The bag was assumed to be for personal use, reported the officer, because it lacked any identifying markers indicating it to be police evidence. Bridges was eventually charged with speeding, driving under the influence, and possession of a narcotic substance.
Atlanta Police Department Refuses to Comment
Nearly two weeks after his arrest by the Cobb County officers, Bridges was officially suspended without pay by his department until the results of his charges are made clear. The suspension came after a hearing was conducted by Atlanta Police Chief George Turner, looking into the circumstances of Bridges arrest.
An official spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department, Sgt. Curtis Davenport, told reporters that it was department policy not to comment on ongoing internal investigations, and that they would therefore not be granting any interviews.
Bridges has been released from custody after posting a $1,400 bail bond. The investigator is known to Atlanta residents as the head of the investigation against the Atlanta Eagle gay bar, where several dozen bar patrons were handcuffed and forced to lie face down on the floor in the 2009 police raid.
