Some Facts about Hit and Run Accidents

By Leonard Matsuk  Feb. 28, 2011 8:41p

By California law, if you are driving and hit a person, another vehicle or damage someone's property, you are required by law to stop and give the other driver your contact information along with presenting your driver's license, registration and insurance information upon request. If you injured anyone, you should immediately see if anyone needs immediate medical help and do whatever possible to see that this occurs. If you happened to damage someone's property and they are not around, you must leave a note with your contact information and also file a police report giving details of what occurred.

Leaving the Scene

If you leave the scene of the accident you have just violated the law and it is now considered a hit and run. You may have been seen by witnesses and will need a skillful and experienced lawyer to defend you. You can be charged with either a misdemeanor or felony, depending on the severity of the accident and whether or not you have had any prior convictions for other offenses. You could be facing imprisonment, monetary fines, probation and restitution to any victims. You will need to get legal help from a  Long Beach attorney to work with you so as to avoid a conviction if at all possible.
