Woman Charged With DUI In Death Of 8-Year Old Boy Outside Chicago
Investigators looking into a fatal automobile accident allege that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash. The woman had smoked marijuana before getting behind the wheel of her car, police say, leading her to lose control and strike the young cyclist.
Reports indicated that the accident took place on Monday, May 21st. The defendant is alleged to have been driving home from work when she collided with a truck at an intersection in Skokie. She was making a left turn when she failed to notice the vehicle, driving east on Main Street. Police say the woman's car went careening over the median and hit the sidewalk, where it crashed into the young victim's bike. The 2nd grader was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Defendant's Past History of Drug Violations Used Against Her
Court documents filed by the prosecution claim that the driver, a 23-year old Skokie native, was smoking marijuana shortly before the fatal collision. The woman was administered a blood test, which returned results showing traces of THC and amphetamines in her bloodstream. In addition, the prosecution says, a witness has admitted to police that he had smoked weed with the defendant that day.
In addition, evidence submitted by the prosecution shows that the driver has a history of run-ins with the law. The young woman has prior charges of drug possession and property damage on her record, along with several speeding tickets and other traffic violations. She has been charged with aggravated DUI and drug DUI. Her bond was set at $250,000.
